The
Plant, acquired in 2002, was Votorantim Cimentos’ second
acquisition outside Brazil (in 2001, VC purchased St. Marys
Cement in the Great Lakes region, kicking off its internationalization
process). Suwannee is located in Brandford, Florida, the
third largest cement market in the United States, VC owns
a 50% share of Suwannee. The other 50% belongs to Anderson
Columbia, a civil engineering company that allied itself
with Votorantim to have a partner in the field of cement
production.
When it began operations, 180 thousand
short tons of cement were being sold per annum. In 2004,
the initial sales forecast was for 400 thousand short tons,
but that goal was exceeded by 100%. This year production
will total almost one million short tons. With success there also comes opportunity for growth. Recently construction has begun in Center Hill, Florida on a new state-of-the art cement mill operating under the name of Sumter Cement Company (SCC). This new facility is operated under the same partnership structure as Suwannee American Cement, and is projected to have the capacity to produce over 1.5 million short tons of Portland cement when operational in 2009. |
